Erling Haaland is set to make his World Cup debut as Norway prepares to face Iraq on Tuesday at the Boston Stadium. This venue holds historical significance, having hosted Diego Maradona’s final World Cup appearance in 1994 when it was known as the Foxboro Stadium.
Norway’s head coach, Ståle Solbakken, has described Haaland as the “world’s best goalscorer,” noting his physical fitness and improved performance in training. Solbakken expressed confidence that if Haaland receives adequate service from his teammates, he has a strong tendency to convert chances into goals. The coach also dismissed speculation regarding Real Madrid’s interest in Haaland, stating it was not a topic of discussion within the team.
Norway’s Talented Squad and Expectations
Former Chelsea player Tore André Flo, once a prominent international striker for Norway, believes the current squad is the most talented in the nation’s history. He highlighted the presence of key players, including the top scorer in the Premier League and the captain of the Premier League-winning team, indicating a strong offensive threat from various positions on the field.
Flo acknowledged the pressure on the team but also noted that qualifying for the World Cup after 28 years is already a significant achievement for the Norwegian people. He expressed no concerns about Haaland’s ability to handle the pressure, citing the player’s consistent progression to higher levels of football.
Arsenal midfielder Martin Ødegaard is considered vital to Norway’s aspirations and plays a crucial role in creating opportunities for Haaland. Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer emphasized the advantage of having two players among the world’s best, bringing confidence and the potential for crucial goals and assists. Ajer also noted a shift in focus towards the collective team effort, despite the attention given to individual stars.

Haaland’s international record shows an average of more than a goal per game. The match against Iraq is seen as a favorable start for his pursuit of the Golden Boot, with subsequent matches against Senegal and France expected to provide tougher challenges.
Haaland’s Journey to the World Cup
Solbakken indicated that he would not need to provide much motivation for his team, and he also addressed a previous disagreement with Scotland over a cancelled training game, stating he had moved past the incident and wished Scotland well.
Haaland’s preparations for the World Cup included activities such as playing golf with childhood friends in Marbella and attending a Stanley Cup final game during Norway’s training camp in North Carolina. The Manchester City player has expressed confidence that Norway will advance from the group stage.

This tournament marks a significant moment for Haaland, as his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was part of the Norway squad that finished at the bottom of their group during the 1994 tournament held in the US. Erling Haaland, at the age of 25, has already become his country’s leading goalscorer with 55 goals from 50 appearances, significantly surpassing other players.
He was instrumental in helping Norway qualify for their first World Cup in 28 years, scoring 16 goals across eight qualifying matches.
Pål Arne Johansen, assistant coach at Molde and a former youth coach for Haaland, recalled the striker’s continuous improvement and a pivotal moment during a Euro qualifier in Germany where Haaland’s speed and power against the German defense showcased his potential as a top player. Norway’s participation in the World Cup is a notable event, marking their return to the tournament after 28 years.
Haaland’s journey to the World Cup follows a successful period with Manchester City, where he contributed to their Champions League victory in 2023.

The match between Norway and Iraq is scheduled for Tuesday.
