New York City has announced an additional watch party location at Bryant Park for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, providing more fans with an opportunity to support the New York Knicks. This decision was made after security considerations prevented a watch party from being held outside Madison Square Garden.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani stated that the watch parties have become a celebration for the city, bringing together people from various boroughs and neighbourhoods to cheer on the Knicks. The addition of Bryant Park aims to allow more fans to participate in this significant moment for the team.
Security Adjustments for Game 3
The U.S. Secret Service and the NYPD determined that a watch party could not be held directly outside Madison Square Garden due to heightened security requirements. These requirements are associated with the planned attendance of President Trump at Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
An official watch party outside MSG, which had been active in previous rounds and returned for the Finals, was cancelled. An MSG spokesperson indicated that the cancellation was not a direct result of the President’s attendance, though the Secret Service acknowledged that maintaining a secure environment played a role in the decision.
The Bryant Park watch party is free to the public, but registration is required, and it will accommodate a maximum of 5,000 attendees. In addition to Bryant Park, other watch party locations include Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl, offering multiple options for fans across the city.
Knicks’ Historic Finals Run Ignites Fan Excitement
The Knicks are making their first appearance in the Finals since 1999, and the team is seen as formidable, with a chance to win the NBA championship for the first time since 1973. This historic run has generated significant excitement throughout New York City.
Fans are travelling from around the world to be part of the atmosphere. Dan Klein, for example, travelled from Albania to New York City to experience the energy, even though he could not afford a game ticket. He had previously watched games from Europe, sometimes on tape delay to avoid spoilers.
Another fan, Steve Codd, a former New Yorker now living in Houston, Texas, is flying back to New York to attend Game 3 at MSG. He purchased his ticket for $3,000 for a single seat in the 200 level, and his round-trip flight cost $400. He plans to return to Houston immediately after the game.
The team arrived at the NBA Finals following an 11-game win streak, with each victory achieved by a double-digit margin. They swept through the Eastern Conference Semifinals and Eastern Conference Finals, leading to a sense of delirium among the fanbase.
The Knicks are currently up 2-0 in the series, having won their first two games in San Antonio. They have now secured 13 playoff wins in a row, marking the second-most in NBA history. The first Finals game at Madison Square Garden in 27 years will be Game 3.
The excitement has transformed the city, with rapper Fat Joe noting the unification of the city through the team’s success. The atmosphere is described as a multi-borough block party, with social media feeds filled with videos of blue-and-orange revelry. The Knicks‘ success has coincided with the arrival of summer weather in New York City.
The cost of attending Finals games in New York has been a national news story, with prices being astronomical. Some fans have even found it cheaper to fly to Texas to attend a game there rather than purchasing seats in New York. The Knicks will play Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
