Sweden’s Strong Start in World Cup Campaign
Sweden commenced their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a significant 5-1 victory over Tunisia in Mexico. The match, held at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, saw Sweden secure all three points in their opening Group F fixture. This win places Sweden at the top of Group F following a 2-2 draw between Japan and the Netherlands in another section match.
The victory was particularly notable given Sweden‘s challenging path to the World Cup. After a difficult qualifying period where they did not win a single game, including two defeats to both Switzerland and Kosovo and two draws against Slovenia, coach Jon Dahl Tomasson was replaced by Graham Potter. Under Potter, Sweden utilized their Nations League performance to earn a repechage chance in the playoffs, where they defeated Ukraine and Poland to secure their spot in the finals.
Potter described the playoff victory against Poland, sealed by an 89th-minute goal from Viktor Gyökeres, as his best night in football. Following the match against Tunisia, Potter commented on the team’s performance, stating, “Great night, great start. It was a solid team performance that allowed Alex [Isak] and Viktor to show their quality. They haven’t played that much together and they’ve had to work in training and in bits, and they needed a team to function behind them.”
Key Players and Tunisian Errors
The match saw a strong performance from Sweden‘s attacking players, with Yasin Ayari scoring two goals. Ayari, born in Stockholm to a Tunisian father, had previously been encouraged to wait for a Sweden call-up when Tunisia attempted to select him in 2021. His first goal came six minutes into the game after Tunisia‘s goalkeeper, Abdelmouhib Chamakh, fumbled Victor Lindelöf‘s ball, allowing Gyökeres to take a shot that rebounded to Ayari.
Alexander Isak also played a pivotal role, scoring one goal and providing two assists, earning him the official Player of the Match award. Isak‘s goal came after he drove at the defense, cutting onto his right foot to fire into the net from the edge of the box. He later assisted Viktor Gyökeres and Mattias Svanberg, with Svanberg scoring moments after entering the pitch. Ayari then completed his brace in injury time, securing Sweden‘s fifth goal.
Tunisia‘s performance was marred by several individual errors, as acknowledged by their manager, Sabri Lamouchi. Chamakh was deemed largely responsible for Sweden‘s first two goals, and later, Ellyes Skhiri‘s decision to wander towards Isak after receiving the ball from Chamakh led to Gyökeres‘s emphatic finish. Lamouchi stated, “There were several individual mistakes, too many of them, and you can’t recover from that. The competition does not forgive.”
Despite the errors, Tunisia did show some offensive intent, with Omar Rekik scoring shortly before halftime by glancing in Hannibal Mejbri’s right-wing cross. Lamouchi had made significant changes to the squad, calling up 11 new players, five of whom started the match.
Looking Ahead for Sweden
Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson featured for 65 minutes for Sweden, contributing to their defensive efforts. He recorded 44 touches and completed 19 passes, alongside seven duels won, five clearances, four recoveries, two tackles, and one interception. There was a brief concern when Gudmundsson left the field, but Potter confirmed it was due to cramp, easing any injury worries.
The match was played in challenging conditions, with temperatures at 27C at kick-off and oppressive dampness. Hydration breaks were implemented, which were met with some boos from fans, but the atmosphere was later lightened by an accordion player.
Sweden‘s attention now shifts to their next crucial fixture against the Netherlands. Isak‘s next outing at the World Cup is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, when he will face Netherlands players including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch. Gudmundsson and his teammates will also return to action on Saturday evening against the Dutch at Houston Stadium.

The win marks a continuation of Graham Potter‘s impact on the Sweden national team, transforming their fortunes after a difficult qualifying campaign. The team will aim to strengthen their position at the summit of Group F in their upcoming match.

The match against the Netherlands will be a significant test for Sweden as they seek to build on their strong start in the tournament.
