2026 World Cup updates: Own goal hands USMNT the early lead2026 World Cup updates: Own goal hands USMNT the early lead

Early Lead for the United States

The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) commenced their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. The team secured an early lead against Paraguay in their first home World Cup match in over 30 years. The opening goal for the USMNT was recorded at 6:48, making it the third-fastest goal scored by a host nation in their first FIFA World Cup match.

The first goal came after Christian Pulisic maneuvered through the Paraguay defense, passing the ball to Weston McKennie in the box. McKennie then forced the ball off Paraguay defender Damián Bobadilla, resulting in an own goal. This marks the fourth own goal benefiting the USA in FIFA World Cup history, placing them alongside Germany and Italy for the second-highest count in the competition.

The USMNT extended their lead when Folarin Balogun scored his first FIFA World Cup goal. He received a pass from Christian Pulisic inside the box, maintained an onside position, and found the back of the net. This goal marks Balogun’s 10th for the USA, with four of those goals coming against CONMEBOL opponents, including two against Paraguay.

Team Dynamics and Player Contributions

The United States demonstrated significant ball control in the early stages of the match, holding approximately 67% possession during the initial 15 minutes and nearly 75% overall. The team also registered 12 touches in the opponent’s box compared to Paraguay’s two. Early in the game, Tim Weah recorded the USMNT’s first shot, prompting a save from Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Shortly after, Matt Freese made his first World Cup save by deflecting a close-range effort from Paraguay.

Chris Richards had an opportunity to score, heading the ball towards the goal, but it went wide. He later sustained a knock to the head while attempting another header but returned to play after receiving treatment. Captain Tim Ream made history by becoming the oldest USMNT player to appear in a FIFA World Cup match. He contributed significantly to ball distribution, completing 30 passes, only four fewer than Paraguay’s entire team.

The USMNT starting lineup included Matt Freese in goal, with defenders Sergiño Dest, Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson, and Tim Ream. The midfield featured Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, Alex Freeman, and Malik Tillman, while Folarin Balogun led the attack. All 26 players on the roster were available for the group stage opener, a decision confirmed by head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Pulisic’s Role and Team Preparation

Christian Pulisic, a prominent figure in American soccer, is seen as a key player for the USMNT, especially with the tournament being held on home soil. His teammates, including Tyler Adams, acknowledge the expectations placed upon him. Pulisic, who has a decade of international experience with both club and country, expressed his readiness for the challenge, stating that it is “what I’ve always wanted.”

Pulisic emphasized his confidence in his teammates, noting that he does not feel the burden of having to perform alone. He believes the presence of strong players around him makes his role easier. Coach Mauricio Pochettino, who took charge of the U.S. team in late 2024, has focused on building an aggressive, attacking squad to reduce reliance on any single player. Since October 2024, 62 players have earned a cap under Pochettino, with 22 different players contributing to the 42 goals scored during his tenure.

The USMNT has a historical record of 5 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws against Paraguay, with their first encounter dating back to the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930. The team is currently on a three-match winning streak against Paraguay, having last defeated them on November 16, 2025.
