Investigation into protocol breach
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has initiated an investigation into an incident involving captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson. The incident occurred at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning, following England‘s victory in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on Sunday. The ECB stated that the players were involved in a “breach of team protocols.”
Both Stokes and Atkinson have been referred to the Cricket Regulator, an independent disciplinary body. This body has the authority to impose suspensions and fines, and its findings could potentially impact their inclusion in the squad for the second Test. An announcement regarding the squad for the upcoming match is expected in due course.
The incident is understood to involve more than just a breach of the team’s standing midnight curfew, which was implemented for players and staff. This curfew has been in place since the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in January and the subsequent T20 World Cup, and it remained active even after the conclusion of the first Test.
In a statement, the ECB confirmed, “The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first men’s Test against New Zealand.” The statement added that “Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place.” The board is actively seeking further information and will provide updates as they become available.
This development follows a period where the England team has faced scrutiny regarding off-field conduct. Director of cricket Rob Key previously investigated a mid-series holiday during the Ashes tour, which drew criticism. Despite this, Key denied the presence of a widespread “drinking culture” within the team.
Previous incidents and team response
This is not the first time England players have been involved in off-field incidents. Prior to the Ashes, white-ball captain Harry Brook was involved in an altercation outside a nightclub in Wellington, New Zealand, before a one-day international. Brook initially claimed to have been alone, but it later emerged that Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were also present.
The incident involving Brook led to a final warning and a fine. Rob Key commented on the situation, stating that while the majority of players are diligent, there can be “two or three players that can be irresponsible with alcohol.” He emphasized the need to find a balance, acknowledging the pressures faced by multi-format players who are often away from home for extended periods.
Ben Stokes himself has a history with nightclub incidents, having been involved in an event outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017, which led to an affray charge. He was subsequently cleared of the charge the following summer but missed the Ashes tour of 2017-18.
Men’s coach Brendon McCullum has previously spoken about the importance of discipline and carrying oneself appropriately while representing the country. He indicated a commitment to maintaining high standards within the team, promising to “use a firm grip” to address any perceived issues.
Following England‘s win at Lord’s, Stokes expressed his happiness, stating, “I’m not going to lie, I’m very, very happy that we’ve won this week. I knew how big this game was in terms of the result and how it was going to be perceived externally if it didn’t go well.” He also added, “I won’t be really happy until I get to share a beer with the boys.”
Atkinson, who is 28, had a strong performance in the match, taking seven wickets, including 5-30 in the second innings. Stokes, 35, had a less successful outing with the bat, scoring 12 in his first innings and a three-ball duck in the second.
The second Test against New Zealand is scheduled to begin on 17 June at The Oval. The outcome of the ongoing investigation could influence the squad selection for this match, potentially affecting the participation of Stokes and Atkinson.

The Cricket Regulator has been informed of the incident, and further updates are expected from the ECB.
